Groupe des Anciens Etudiant Rescapés du Genocide (GAERG), is an organization with the mission of strengthening the capacity of survivors community, to overcome consequences of genocide against the Tutsi to effectively contribute to the genocide prevention and reflecting on their role in the sustainable development of Rwanda

GAERG works to improve the quality of life and life skills for survivors as preconditions for their effective active participation in the national political development agenda. We believe that being a responsible and active citizen requires social, political and economic transformation.

The transformation journey for survivors requires multiple efforts and different initiatives to move them forward. And the effectiveness of these initiatives requires energies from different stakeholders and partners according to the needs to be addressed. Among others, GAERG members share moral needs. They encompass the need to give and receive love, for friends, and for belonging and the fulfillment of these play a very important part in the transformation of their lives. GAERG has raised different initiatives and systematic approaches to systematically address these needs and GAERG’s Umuganura is a platform to showcase and celebrate what has been achieved so far.

Since 2010, GAERG started to celebrate the harvest “Umuganura” with the aim of acknowledging what has been achieved. This was due to the fact that, as an organization formed by survivors of Genocide against Tutsis, there are special things to celebrate.

During GAERG Harvest Celebration, members celebrate life after the Genocide. Members celebrate achievements in different life angels; Education, Jobs, Marriage, Offspring and many other social-economic achievements. And this has a unique meaning of family reanimation that differ GAERG’s Umuganura with the normal one, but we consider its similarities.

In this concept, we are going into details on how the GAERG Harvest Celebration

2019 will be undertaken through our main two activities; We get together 2019, and

Hobera Ubuzima 2019.

I. WE GET TOGETHER 2019

Since 2017, GAERG started an initiative to bring together its members, to let them know each other and increase their level of relationship through a social and entertaining experience which might be different from the existing ones.

An idea comes up and GAERG  decided to organize “WE  GET  TOGETHER Initiative” which is an event of organized games that bring together GAERG families in a family hood football competition. Under the organization mission, within our families’ philosophy, and the idea behind the concept, we keep in mind that for GAERG members, playing football and other games is not about winning games; it is about winning back their lives and joint efforts to sustain their future aspirations as brothers and sisters.

The 1st Edition and 2nd Edition of WE GET TOGETHER has attracted a big number of our members, they played, discussed, shared love and family hood spirit.   74

Games were very interesting and the report was very positive. These editions left us

with lessons for better preparation of the 3rd  edition that is going to attract more than 100 families categorized in 16 Teams whereby each one has between seven and eight families and the later are grouped in 4 poules. The 2019 WE GET TOGETHER’s theme is “Our family; our safe space for Growth and Prosperity.”  We believe in the reality that People = Success.

OBJECTIVES

    To build tight relationship between GAERG members

    To  bring  together  different  generations  for  networking  and  mentorship purposes

TARGET OUTCOME

As clear as understandable in the objectives of this WE GET TOGETHER, there is more benefit that  is  brought  together  in one activity.  Some  of  them  are  the following:

  The WE GET TOGETHER will improve sociability among GAERG members.

  The WE GET TOGETHER will be a good time to uplift GAERG moral spirit and elevate Family and members’ performance towards GAERG activities.

  Participants will openly interact and this will let all participants be aware of the GAERG mission, its philosophy, and aspirations.

    Families will ends up joining capacities and build a  long-lasting relationship. (Eg: Those who are joined together to form a team may continue by building strong relationships).

    The initiative will result in building bonds among participants and ends up by connecting generations.

NB: As an activity part of the GAERG  –  Harvest  Celebration  “Umuganura”, GAERG plans to share drinks and discussions at the pitch. And the discussion topics will rise around the main theme to build our families and become a safe space for growth and sustainability.

METHODOLOGY, LOGISTICS, AND GUIDELINES

1. The WE GET TOGETHER tournament will attract 113+ GAERG families, and each family is requested to contribute its effort to support players who will represent the family in both encouragement and financial needs when deemed necessar

2. With an  effect  that  some  families  can’t  form  a  team  with  their  members themselves, seven to eight families are joined together to form one tea This helped to  end  up with  16  teams.  And  this  is  the  starting point  of  WE GET TOGETHER as GAERG families

3. The tournament will use knockout sys At the start, Teams will be grouped in poules. Four teams in a group will contest and two teams will qualify for the quarter finals that will be a knockout stage as well

4. In case of equalizations between teams, penalties at each stage will be used to

determine which team to proceed to the next round

5. GAERG will arrange mechanisms to get pitches for teams, and referee Teams are encouraged to find balls. At least one ball per Team

6. All teams are encouraged to include ladies in their tea At least two ladies are

mandatory in the starting lineup for each team

7. A team that will fail to find at least two Ladies in the starting lineup will start the match with only 9 players in the ground within the first 15 minutes of the ga

8. It is not allowed to substitute a lady with a gentleman before the end of 15 minutes of the ga She can only be substituted by another lady

9. Teams that bring together families from provinces, parents are encouraged to negotiate what to do for the sake of leaving no one behind

10. The game’s halftime will take 40 minutes.

11. The game’s break will be 10 minutes

12. The game’s full time will be 90 Minutes.

13. Due to the fact that this tournament will be more social than competitive, there is no limit for substitutions. Even those who have been substituted within the game will be allowed to re-substitute again

14. After the match  there  will  be  an  interactive  discussion  that  will  bring  allparticipants together.

15. The discussion will be about “Connecting Generations | Guhuza Urungano” and Resilience for GAERG member With a core theme of making “Our families, a safe space for growth and prosperity”

16. Discussion moderators will be “Game Commissioners” nominated by GAERG from members and main speakers will be invited by GAERG either from members or its frien

17. The team that will win the tournament at the final stage will be motivated with a trophy as an award

18. Families are encouraged to work together to find means for basic needs of player’s Jersey, Water, Sugar and Transport inca And to ensure a favorable environment/Area to conduct the after match discussion

19. GAERG will allocate 40,000 Rwf/match to help sharing soft drinks as a way to celebrate the harvest together. GAERG Harvest celebration “Umuganura”

20. Players should be GAERG members

21. As we will use a knockout plan, the 1/8 will have 8 matches. So we need 8 pitches for this sta

22. The Quarterfinal will bring together 8 teams that make four matches. At this stage, we can have two matches on match day. Therefore, we need two pitches. And this will be a knock out stage

23. The ½ will bring together 4 teams that make two matches. At this stage, we need two pitches as well

24. Site Manager is the overall coordinator of all activities at the Any need of information should be in his control.  For  an  immediate  decision,  he/she  must consult family parents and members of the GAERG committee available at the site to negotiate and decide what to do to handle the situation

25. Site Managers should do their best to be aware that pitches are available and ready

for the match. When challenges about the availability of the pitch arise, he/she may contact GAERG Executive Secretary to handle the situation.

26. Site Manager should arrive at the game ground one hour before the game’s starting

time to ensure the safety and availability of the pitch

27. All games will take place according to the established calendar. And shall start at 2 PM. This instruction can be changed in one way or another after an agreement between respective tea And the decision should be communicated to the Site Managers and The GAERG-Executive Secretary before 48 Hours.

28. Forfeiture sanction is allowed when one team of the contesting teams is well prepared at the ground and ready to play and wait for the other team up to 30 minutes. The decision will be taken by the Site Manager for forfeiture and a match automatically ends and the forfeiting team loses.

29. Each of the teams is only allowed to start to play if it has at least 7 players to start the ga If a team fails to complete 7 players ladies included, and this lasts for 30 minutes while the other team is waiting, it will be forfeited and loses the game.

30. Site Manager should keep in mind that before the game start, there should be a moment of remembrance to pay tribute to our loved ones killed during Genocide against Tutsi

31. There will be a WEGET TO GETHER Evaluation Sheet for each Team To fulfill the evaluation sheet, Site Manager will be assisted by Social affairs commissioners from

any family of their choice in each team. He/She should be aware of the credibility of the information provided before his or her signature.

32. For Protocol purposes, before the game starts, Site manager and Family parents from all teams and the delegate from the GAERG committee available at the site will enter the game ground to greet players and referees.  Team  Captains  will introduce their teammates and say which Family they come from

33. Site manager should be in touch with Family parents to ensure that all teams are ready and prepared from everything that will help in the smooth running of the match

34. To determine how teams will meet in the group stage, we will use selections. On 25th

August representatives of teams will select how teams will meet.

35. To determine how teams will meet in quarter four, Teams in group A will meet

Teams in group B and so forth.

II. HOBERA UBUZIMA 2019

Under  Hobera  Ubuzima,  GAERG families visit survivor’s villages and  AERG Sections to share life and discuss cooperation and advocacy for possible ways to enhance lives for vulnerable survivors.

This will be done in two ways:  

1.Visit Survivors villages

  To celebrate Umuganura, Under Hobera Ubuzima, GAERG families under the group’s umbrella will choose 3 villages to visit and delegate who will represent the group. Thus 50 Villages will be visited.

 GAERG will allocate 50,000 Rwf to each group to facilitate sharing drinks.

   The implementation period is between September to November 2019.

   Villages to be visited will be chosen from existing villages that are being visited by GAERG families. A group will choose among the many and decide which village to be visited.

2.Visit AERG Section

 GAERG wish to reach out to at least 20 AERG sections of University

  Where there is a possibility to bring together AERG sections at one place, it will be an opportunity to reach out to many sections at once. This is possible, in some areas like Huye, Ngoma, Nyagatare, Rwamagana and some sections in Kigali to mention few.

  GAERG groups will arrange how the visit will be done conducted.

  GAERG  will  provide  50,000  Rwf  per  each  of  the  20  sections  to facilitate  the  share  of  drinks  to  celebrate  Umuganura  with  our young brothers and Sisters. This is as well expected to be conducted in a period from September to November.

Thus, GAERG plan to celebrate Umuganura with 50 survivors villages and 20 AERG section across the country.
